Extending Paging to Mobile Classrooms

Due to rapid growth in the district, several campuses have had to use temporary buildings to house classrooms.  The IT department has been tasked with extending to these classrooms all paging and intercom activities including safety alerts, class bells, morning announcements, etc., along with providing the teacher a view outside the doorway as no other windows provide visibility outside the temporary building.  Knowing the buildings will be in use for an estimated 3 years, the IT department must find a solution that is inexpensive to implement with little or no capital investment wasted when the buildings are no longer needed.

Solving this challenge will benefit the District in the following ways:

  • Being able to provide paging into and visibility outside the temporary buildings are key to the safety and security of the teachers and students occupying them.
  • By using existing hardware and minimizing further capital investment at each campus for each temporary building, the district can save hundreds of thousands of dollars district wide
  • By providing the same bell schedules/sounds to the temporary buildings, students will feel more connected to the main building and less distracted from being in a temporary building
  • By simplifying the implementation of paging to the temporary buildings, the IT department is less taxed by each campus as they place, move, and remove temporary buildings

Solution

The focus of this solution is the inherent scalability of paging including class bells and security alerts when driven by the school’s VoIP infrastructure

  • Audible and Text Paging is provided to the IP phone and/or IP speaker using the data drop provided to each temporary building, eliminating the need for any additional analog wiring for paging purposes only
  • Class bells to the temporary buildings are provided by scheduled-based paging through IPcelerate’s IPsession server, with the content simulating the normal class bell tones heard in the main building
  • Paging Zones, easily configured on IPcelerate’s IPsession server, can be changed to include the IP phones in the temporary buildings and easily removed as needed.
  • The screen on the IP phone gives the teacher access to still images taken from a video camera with the temporary building’s door in view, ensuring safe conditions before releasing students
  • Intecom allows the office to automatically open a line of communication with teachers in temporary buildings
