Recorded Lesson Podcasts

A school district is seeing a significant increase in absences due to the H1N1 virus, and students grades are beginning to suffer due to so many missed classes at the high school.  Teachers want a way to keep the sick students up-to-speed without having to create additional instruction material outside the classroom environment, where questions are asked and the additional dialogue enriches the learning experience.

Solving this challenge will benefit the district in the following ways:

  • Students missing class for extended periods of time will be able to keep up with the curriculum, making their return to the classroom easier.
  • As students maintain their grade levels by not falling behind, test scores remain high and the school district maintains its campuses’ high ratings.
  • By extending education out to the homes, families feel a higher level of appreciation, loyalty and support for the district, which positively impacts other school activities and organizations.
  • If proven effective, the district will be recognized as a technology leader amongst other districts, driving higher levels of attendance from families seeking better education for their children.

Solution

  • A teacher with nearly 30% of her students absent due to illness plans to record today’s important lesson for those students not in attendance.
  • Before starting the lesson, the teacher presses an icon on the classroom IP phone which places a call to a pre-defined extension, dialing a hunt group containing 25 extensions, all set to auto answer, and always-on recording.
  • Throughout the lesson, as students ask questions, the teacher makes sure to repeat them  before answering, improving the quality of the recording.
  • Once the lesson is completed, the teacher terminates the on-going call on the classroom IP phone and sends an email to the IT dept., letting them know to upload the recorded file to a podcast, which will be made available via the school website.
  • The teacher presses another icon on the classroom IP phone, initiating a message recorder, allowing the teacher to send out a notice of the blog to absent students’ home phones and cell phones.
