Personal Directory without IT Involvement

The IT department of a mid-size manufacturing company has been tasked with migrating their current PBX to Cisco’s Unified Communications.  Knowing that some users will reside on the legacy PBX and others on the new Cisco infrastructure, they are challenged to deploy a directory application where CUC users can contain contact information for extensions on the PBX.  More importantly, the directory application must not require administrative support to configure and use as the entire IT department will be heavily utilized with the PBX migration.

Solving this challenge will benefit the company in the following ways:

  • Employees can access the Personal Directory application from their IP phone, eliminating the need for the IT department to create and maintain log-on credentials to an administrative interface.
  • Because the application is accessed and utilized from the IP phone, users experience an environment similar to their smart mobile devices, eliminating the need for IT department support or training.
  • As early adopters are drawn to the new CUC infrastructure, further migration is made easier as the community of experienced CUC users reduces the resources needed to support new users.
  • By providing enterprise directory applications that employees use for business communications, the company can better monitor employee activity and communications, ensuring they meet company regulations.
  • If employees utilize the company’s enterprise for all communications, the company can provide the best technologies to its employees, standardizing across multiple offices and regions.

Solution

The focus of this solution is to a way for employees to access their own contacts from the Cisco IP Phone.

  • An employee selects an icon from the screen of their IP phone providing them access to a Personal Directory application.
  • Via the screen of their IP phone, the employee has the ability to create their own contact groups containing corporate, business related, or personal contacts similar to mobile phone applications.
  • The employee can quickly type out a first or last name, or portions of a name from their IP phone screen by utilizing a QWERTY keyboard. From the Personal Directory application, the employee can easily initiate calls by the touch of a button.
  • The user is able to access and drive the different Personal Directory application options similar to other smart mobile device directory applications, creating a higher comfort level with the new CUC infrastructure.
